For instance, using a crisp white trim against a muted green wall or a dramatic darker colour instantly frames the windows and doors, highlights architectural details, and creates a sense of uniformity across the space. The effect feels both polished and inviting — a subtle nod to classic interiors, but with a modern twist.

It’s a small design choice that makes a big visual impact. The contrast draws the eye to the craftsmanship, makes the walls's colour richer, and gives the whole room a layered, intentional look.

Tip: Choose a trim colour that complements your wall shade without competing with it — white is timeless, but deeper tones can add even more mood and sophistication.

The answer is Yes and no. Here’s what to consider:

Yesterday, I told you about a quick makeover Frank's Gallery was doing at a client's apartment. Having recently started his private counselling practise my client wanted a 'calm', stylish corner where he could work while also doing online consultations. Together we decided to redecorate one of the corners in his living. It previously had a sense of 'drama' to it with hand painted stripes on the walls and a large gilded antique mirror. For the makeover we repainted the stripes with an elegant soft sand colour, replaced the gilded mirror a much simpler one and we bought a beautiful mid-century side board... Job done! Just completed a very delicate reupholstery project, giving new life to this late 17th century French daybed - replacing the original woven tapestry upholstery with a durable, stain proof and dog-friendly regal golden velvet. Sadly, I couldn't keep the original hand-sprung mattress base simply because my client chose comfort over authenticity. So, it was replaced with waterproof upholstery foam... a difficult but wise decision. I reused the 500 original decorative bronze upholstery nails, which was a painstaking labour of love bending each one of them straight again to be reused. Finally, I added two new handmade bolsters. 2. It allows for design and interior ideas to evolve and change.
3. It's less disruptive especially when you are living in the property while the work is being done.

This project happened in 3 stages, which included the master bedroom, living room and entrance hall and staircase.

Suffice to say my client is very pleased with the results and so is Frank's Gallery.

Entrance hallways and staircases are high traffic areas in any home. They are what people see first when they enter your home, making them ideal spaces for creating a wow factor.

This entrance hall and its connecting staircase gave an open invitation for adding elegance and drama to this Victorian terrace house.

The one thing people appreciate after a grey, cold and wet winter is their outdoor spaces.

This large terrace was in desperate need of a spruce up.

Removing the old tattered bamboo 'fence', a fresh lick of paint and adding some plants quickly turned it into the inviting sun trap it deserves to be.

The addition of garden lights now also transform it to its full potential as a magical outdoor space ready to be enjoyed on those warm summer evenings.

Really pleased with my belated 50th birthday gift to myself - a beautiful etching, called The Bathers. It was done by the Polish sculptor Astrid Zydower, MBE(1930-2005),who made hundreds of etchings that she gifted to her friends.

The Bathers was part of het estate. It was passed onto her close friend and fellow artist Michael Leonard when she died. After Leonard's passing the piece was handed over to a collector.

It's a perfect addition to my art wall. I love it!

Here's a simple storage solution you can do yourself at home, especially if you have IKEA shelving units you want to repurpose.

What you need:

IKEA (or any other) box shelf unit for the base.

Sanding paper

Acrylic primer

Silk finish paint (colour of your choice)

Industrial pipes and fittings based on the measurements you need. You can easily get these on homemakers platforms like Etsy.

What you do:

Lightly sand the base (IKEA box shelves in this case) until the surface has a rough texture.

Prime the base with acrylic primer - two coats

Mount the pipe-system according to your requirements and make sure it is secured to the wall.

Finish by painting the base with your chosen colour - at least two coats.

I'm very pleased with the result of this makeover.

This very small bedroom was previously a cluttered dumping site that overwhelmed whoever entered through the door.

It now feels much calmer and spacious with additional storage and a bespoke built 'sleep zone'.

But the final verdict lies with my 13-year-old client:

"...the bed looks so cozy and so private, I can't wait to finally settle in :) Again, wow, I can't even word how amazing the room looks, it is so beautiful and opens so many opportunities to experiment with my style. Thank you!"

This heartfelt message from a 13-year-old with autism and who is going through identity changes, had a big impact on me.

It illustrates how important it is to have a safe space where your self-worth is nurtured and where you know without a doubt that you are deserving of everything that is good in life.

"I know I've already said this so much to the point it's probably annoying, but I can't stress enough that what you're doing means so much to me, and I'm sorry if I ever come across as being rude.

You're transforming not only my room, but this whole stage of my life into a much better place, and I'm so insanely lucky for all the hard work that you're putting in. I think I still have to grasp the concept that this whole thing revolves around me, and I have to take responsibility for that... "

The results are in.I completed my latest project yesterday and I am very pleased with the outcome, and so is my client.

Using shades of grey as bass colours, I created a neutral space where any other colour would easily fit is - creating vibrant splashes of colour throughout the room.

Working with architraves and stripes I added form, depth and the illusion of different spaces within the space. I also created additional storage by covering the unsightly gas meter and adding much-needed shelves.

The result is and elegant and stylish space that is calm and easy to relax in.

Job done at this Victorian terrace house (four days before the deadline).

Last stretch was a bit of a backbreaker painting the hallway and staircase. Those ceilings are sooo high but at least I got a good back, shoulders, legs and glutes workout 💪🏼🤪

Job speck:

Painting and repairing the ceilings throughout the property.

Painting the walls and repairing superficial damage/ wear and tear in the kitchen, living room, two upstairs bedrooms and hallway, landing and staircase.

Repairing, sanding and painting the staircase balustrade.

Repairing, sanding and painting window frames.

This period property, situated in a conservation area in Elephant and Castle (London), was left in a bit of a mess after a film crew used as a location for filming a TV series.

The clients initially was keen to change the original colour pallet from yellow to a light soft grey blue, but then decided to stick to what they had before...

Sometimes, it's ok to not step out of comfort zone.
